Got Beef Cardiff 10 Off With Haircut
At the bottom of Cowbridge Road East, and conveniently located at the edge of 'town', Canton, Riverside and Pontcanna, is Amaryllis salon.
I've been getting my hair cut at Amaryllis since it first opened. Every time I visit, I loved the contrast from the hustle-bustle of Castle Street versus their little oasis of calm. Two friends – Tiffany and Rebecca – set up the salon together, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that they are two of the friendliest, warmest and most genuine ladies I've ever met.
An eco-friendly ethos
Friendly as they may be, it's the eco-friendly measures that Tiff and Rebecca have put in place at the salon that really set them apart. and they believe passionately that sustainability is a way of life; since opening they have strived to set the precedent in Wales and show how easily sustainability can be embedded into the industry. Their measures include:
🌿 Amaryllis is a member of the Green Salon Collective, which aims to facilitate sustainability by recycling salon waste that was previously thought to be un-recyclable.
🌿 The salon is signed up to an excess colour and bleach recovery service, to ensure that no leftover chemicals ever make it into landfill or Welsh waters.
🌿 All chopped hair from the salon is sent off to be turned into hair booms and mats to protect the ocean from oil spills, instead of going to landfill – how incredible is that!?
🌿 All used hair foils are recycled. Only 1% of all salon foil and other metals are currently recycled across the UK.
🌿 Toilet paper in the customer loo is from Who Gives A Crap – this is made from 100% recycled bamboo, and 50% of profits help to build toilets and improve sanitation in the developing world.
🌿 The salon also supports three charities; Haircuts 4 Homeless, the Hair and Beauty Charity, and FoodCycle.
🌿 Each client pays an extra £1 "green fee" to guarantee that all hair, foils & chemical waste are recycled sustainably.
Exclusive Davines Products
Amaryllis is also the only salon in the country to offer (and use) products by Davines, a B-corp, Italian haircare brand who have an impressive commitment to sustainability. Davines' production plants and offices have been completely powered by renewable energy since 2006, meaning that every product formulated, designed and produced by the company has been created with 100% clean energy.
Customers at Amaryllis receive 10% off new purchases if they bring back an old Davines product container for recycling.
If you're a fan of changing your hair colour often, then Amaryllis is definitely a good choice for you. As Tiffany explained to me, "Davines colour is so superior, because their Vibrachrom™ technology uses a quinoa protein extract and omega 3 to ensure the hair is coloured with strength, a high conditioning effect, shine and outstanding durability."
The quinoa itself is grown in Peru in a way that benefits and respects the local population and landscape. It's all pretty groundbreaking stuff. I had my dark, curly hair lightened at Amaryllis for the first time ever recently, and was so chuffed with the result.
Sustainability is a 'way of life'
Tiff and Rebecca have obviously worked so hard over the last few years to get Amaryllis to where it is today – a forward thinking salon operating in the most sustainable way possible.
Tiff said: "We believe sustainability is a way of life, and since opening we have strived to set the precedent in Wales and show how easily this can be done in the hairdressing industry. Customers can leave the salon completely guilt-free – and it's so easy that every hairdresser in Cardiff could do the same.
"The beauty industry doesn't need to have an ugly side. Recycling foils, hair and chemicals is something that all hair salons can start doing right now. A few simple changes can make a real, lasting impact and we can all play our part."
Before you go back to your usual hairdresser for your next cut and colour, consider giving the Amaryllis team a try, I'm convinced you'll love it. And, they offer 20% off for new clients, too.
You can find Amaryllis on Cowbridge Road East. They are also contactable via their website, on Twitter, and on Facebook.
